GENERAL INFORMATION CONCERT FOR POOLE AFRICA LINK A concert featuring the Dorset Police Male Voice Choir and Cantilena Choir in support of the Poole Africa Link with Wau Hospital in Southern Sudan is on Saturday, February 11th at 7.30 p.m. at St Michael's Church, Blandford Road, Hamworthy. Tickets are £8 from the Poole Hospital Charity Shop - main reception. In view of the fact that some of the publicity for this event seems to have gone astray, no doubt tickets will be available on the night. TWIN SAILS BRIDGE NEWS Poole's long awaited second harbour crossing, the Twin Sails Bridge, will open to traffic on Monday, February 27th. To celebrate the completion of this 20-month construction project a community weekend will be held on Saturday and Sunday, February 25th and 26th on the Twin Sails Bridge before it opens to road traffic. On the Saturday The Mayor of Poole and invited local guests will lead the first group to walk across the Twin Sails Bridge. The Mayor of Poole will then invite all local residents to participate in a walk across the bridge giving a fantastic opportunity to see their new bridge close up. To mark this special occasion Poole Rotary Club will be offering residents the chance to purchase a commemorative certificate for a minimum £2 donation with all money raised going to local charities. The Twin Sails Bridge will also be available for residents to walk across on the Sunday. This landmark structure stretches across the Backwater Channel providing an additional road link for Poole Town and Hamworthy communities unlocking one of the largest regeneration sites in the South West. An official opening ceremony will be held on Friday, March 9th. This is the anniversary of the opening of Poole's current bridge which opened on March 9th, 1927. A free two hour spectacular event will be held on the former power station site in Hamworthy involving music, singing, parades and much more. Due to the capacity of the site this will be a ticket only event. Further celebrations will continue on Poole Quay including music, street entertainment and a firework display at 9 p.m. MUSIC FROM RUSSIA We are a small singing group (four people) from St. Petersburg, Russia. We often go on concert tours abroad and we would be happy to give concert at your venue, church or hall. Please, contact us if interested or able to help. Have a look at our web-site, please: http://www.lyra-online.org/ Kind regards Andrei Sysoev LYRA vocal ensemble St Petersburg, Russia aasysa@gmail.com http://www.lyra-online.org/ SUPPORTING POOLE METHODISTS As part of fundraising for the redevelopment project which mostly involves the High Street Methodist Church building in Poole, a "Friends of Poole Methodists" is being set up with the aim of enlisting the support of those beyond the immediate church community. This might involve non-churchgoing friends, neighbours, relatives and possibly people who used to be associated with one of the five churches but have moved away. SALISBURY DIOCESAN EVANGELICAL FELLOWSHIP This group will be meeting in February, on Monday, 27th, at St John's Church, Leigh Road, Wimborne, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The guest speaker is the Reverend Dr David Wenham, Vice-Principal of Trinity College Bristol. He is a New Testament theologian and has written extensively about the much-debated relationship between the theology of Paul and the teachings of Jesus. He is described as "an outstandingly gifted speaker and teacher....with a practical approach and pastoral heart." The title of his presentation is "New Light on Jesus and Paul - Intriguing and important ideas for preachers and evangelists". There is no need to pre-register your attendance and there is no fee, although an offering will be taken to cover costs. You will need to take your sandwich lunch, although drinks will be provided. Further information from rev.nicki@gmail.com. HISTORIC WALK IN POOLE Rotary Club of Poole Bay is doing a project with the Borough of Poole Council and various local clubs and societies to celebrate the existence of the network of footpaths in central Poole. The network of paths includes all the rights of way such as the alleys on the Quay; various lanes and footpaths off of the High Street and many more in the surrounding residential areas. Among several ideas some additional "trails", such as the well established Cockle trail and the new Poole Trail (launched in January 2012), have been suggested. A children's trail - giving a young person's perspective; and an explorer trail - to highlight public art and interesting places in the town are two that are being planned. A faith trail has been suggested too. The idea is straightforward - a short note is needed on the most interesting facets of Poole when considering the celebration of faith in Poole today and historically. The information will become an attractive summary incorporating images, a map and text, probably as a folded leaflet in a house-style common to each of the leaflets produced. The project is due to end in July 2012 and it is imagined that the work on leaflets is to be completed by end June. The Rotary Club is happy to work with anyone producing a leaflet through support in design and delivery of the product itself. The leaflets are imagined to require enough information to cover two or maybe four sides of A4 paper with text, diagrams and pictures; including a map of the trail itself, incorporating information about interesting "faith" subjects to be found in the area, and some line drawings or photographic reproductions of relevant images. Should more information be collected in preparing the leaflet then this will also become part of the product of the project. As Don Nutt, the club president and project leader points out, there is probably already lots of relevant information about the churches and places of relevance. The task is thus for someone to volunteer to source and collect the various pieces of information together and then to edit them, perhaps in association with the Churches Together group, into what will be a celebration of not only the rights of way but also of faith in Poole. ORGANIST NEEDED St Michael's in Hamworthy is currently without a regular organist/pianist/choir director, as the current musician has retired from the post. Are there any organists out there who would like to be involved in helping this church with music on Sunday mornings, guiding a very enthusiastic choir, and possibly being the catalyst for further music events? On the other hand, any organists/pianists who don't want a regular "job" who would like to help out in the interim by proving help on occasional Sundays, please get in touch with the Rector, Stuart Goddard on 01202 674878. AND WHILE WE ARE THINKING OF THAT..... If you or somebody in your parish needs a helping hand and to know more about opportunities, training days, how to be involved in church music, or more, then the Diocese recommends the following websites: http://www.volunteerorganist.com/ and http://www.pipeup.org.uk/. WARNING TO MAGAZINE EDITORS Editors are usually grateful to kind parishioners who may come up with useful pieces of prose or verse they have found elsewhere for their publication. Please be warned that there may be copyright matters involved in such pieces. Items like the famous piece "Footprints" is still going the rounds and credited to "Anonymous" and the poor Canadian author is getting no acknowledgement. If possible, get your kind donor to tell you where the item came from, if possible, so that you can credit it to the author or other source. It's not a good idea to say something like "found by Mrs Smith" - it might well come from a circulated Christian source which might demand payment from you. If it comes from a newspaper or magazine, it may well save you money and trouble to get the permission of the appropriate Editor.
