POOLE ANGLICAN DEANERY NEWSSHEET

September 2010

Some of this  information comes from the Communications Department of the Diocese and I am in touch with a number of other sources including magazines from our local churches and parishes in the Poole Deanery.   Please feel free to use as required.

GENERAL INFORMATION

BOURNEMOUTH WILLIAM TEMPLE ASSOCIATON

The programme for this group is now available and the 2010/11 season has the theme of “The Way, the Truth and the Life”.   Meetings are usually held on the first Monday of the month at the Marsham Court Hotel in Bournemouth and begin with a meal at 7 p.m., which should be booked beforehand with the secretary.   The talk follows at around 8.10 p.m., and coffee is by then also available for a small price.   This time the speakers include the former Bishop of Strasbourg, the Reverend Canon W J Milligan, the former Bishop of Truro, the Right Reverend Bill Ind, the Conservation Director of A Rocha, Andy Lester, and the Bournemouth Nightclub Chaplain, Michael French.   Further information can be obtained from the chairman, the Reverend Glyn James on glyn.james1@ntlworld.com.

AUTUMN FILM EVENINGS

Hosted by the St Peter’s Education Strategy Group and Parkstone United Reformed Church, these will be held at Parkstone URC in Commercial Road, Poole, at 7.30 p.m. on four dates – September 29th, October 13th, November 9th and November 23rd.   Each showing will be introduced and hosted and the evening begins with refreshments.   A contribution of £5 is requested to cover expenses.   The films are “The Simpsons – Bart loses his soul”, “Dr Who”, “The Vicar of Baghdad”, “Dogma” and “Ubuntu”.

OPEN WEEK PLUS IN ENSBURY PARK

Autumn this year means a series of events at St Thomas’ Church, Ensbury Park, Bournemouth, beginning with a concert n Saturday, September 25th, joining with “Back to Church Sunday” on September 26th and then a week of “Open House” with contributions from local youngsters and others, ending with the Harvest Supper on October 3rd and Harvest Thanksgiving Services on October 3rd.   Meanwhile, this month, members will be given a £1 coin – with the challenge to increase it to £10 all as part of another get together on 10.10.10 (October 10th) when there will be a sponsored walk/run/cycle/buggy push along the seafront.

LIVING HISTORY

There is a new community Exhibition which has been prepared by the Borough of Poole, Poole Museums Service, Poole Housing Partnership, Faithworks/Wessex and Bridging Communities with the theme of “I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else”.   The exhibition gives us stories from the past and hopes for the future in both Lower Hamworthy and Poole Old Town.

The good news is that it will be on display at St Michael’s Church from Saturday, September 11th (which is DHCT Cycle Ride Day).   As they will be welcoming visiting walkers and cyclists tjey would like to invite others in the community who have yet to see the Exhibition and join them with tea, coffee, cakes and biscuits, being served from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

It is hoped that the exhibition will remain in St Michael’s for the Poole Africa Link Concert on Saturday, September 25th, for “Back to Church” Sunday on September 26th, for Harvest Festival weekend with the Supper and Quiz on Saturday, October 2nd and the Parade and Family Service on Sunday, October 3rd.

Churches or Societies that would like to book this exhibition need to contact Katie Gardiner at Poole Museum on 01202 262607.

NEWS FROM THE POOLE/AFRICA LINK

A team will be leaving for Wau hospital in Southern Sudan on Friday, September 3rd and returning a fortnight later.   The team will comprise Hilary Fenton-Harris (PAL Co-ordinator and Nurse), Frankie Dormon (consultant anaesthetist), Alison Ahee (deputy sister in paediatrics), Mandy Layzell (pain control nurse specialist) and Sarah Barton (midwife).   After spending a couple of days in Juba en route (waiting for internal connecting flights) the team will meet with officials from the Government of Southern Sudan (GOSS) and visit Juba hospital.

In Wau, the teaching and training programme which was begun on the visit last November will be continued.   There is an invitation to undertake more teaching to the nursing students at the training schools run by local nuns.  The team hopes to be able to see the works that have been undertaken by GOSS since their last visit, with the first phase of renovation which includes a new mortuary, improvements to doctors’ accommodation and some wards.   The standby generator has been recently repaired.   The PAL fundraising for the Wau Teaching Hospital continues and it is hoped that a portable ECG machine can be acquired (costing about £2,500) for them to take with them on their September visit.

Tickets for the Concert as part of fundraising for this work by the Dorset Police Male Voice Choir is at St Michael’s Church, Hamworthy, at 7.30 p.m. on Saturday, September 25th.   Tickets at £7 are available from John C Barham (Poole 241871) or from the Wish List Office at the entrance of Poole Hospital (442840).

You will see that I am getting information from some churches and not others.   Do join in.   Even if you don’t have a magazine or newssheet, perhaps there is some other way you can let me know what you are doing within Poole Deanery.   Try e-mail.   My grateful thanks to those of you who faithfully send your parish mags to me.   They do get  read.   They do get used.
